The Declaration ofFinancial Independence
The shared creed of the Compounders. Ratified by each of us, in our own name, on the day we choose to begin.
When in the course of a working life it becomes necessary to break from the habits that keep us earning yet never free, and to claim the independence our work was always meant to buy, a decent respect for those who built before us, and those who will build after, requires that we declare the causes that move us to it.
Our aim is singular: financial freedom. The day what we own can fund the life we choose, with or without our labor.
We hold these truths to be self-evident
That wealth is a craft, and any craft can be learned, practiced, and taught.
That income is not freedom. A high income consumed is only a larger cage.
That financial freedom can be measured: our productive assets divided by what we spend, and at 25x over, work becomes a choice.
That every dollar and every hour either compounds our freedom or consumes it.
That no one should have to do this alone, for a path walked together is walked farther.
That what we build is meant to be passed on: to our families, to those who come after us, and to one another.
We declare our independence from
The belief that a larger paycheck is the same as a freer life.
The spending that trades our tomorrow to decorate today.
The lifestyle that grows faster than the freedom beneath it.
The myth that money is too complex to learn, or too private to discuss.
The silence that leaves each of us to work it out alone.
And we resolve, as Compounders
To learn the craft, practice it, and put it to work, until we build the machine that compounds for us.
To keep more than we earn, build with what we keep, and protect what we build, giving time the room to do its work.
To ascend, step by step, until work becomes a choice and not a requirement.
To measure our freedom honestly and pursue it with patience, never mistaking the look of wealth for the fact of it.
To never climb alone: to teach the ones behind us, learn from the ones ahead, and rise by freeing each other rather than out-earning each other.
And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on discipline, on patience, and on one another, we mutually pledge our effort, our knowledge, and our honor, to see every one of us free.
